My name is Amy Rojek and on paper, I am a special education teacher with a masters degree. I am in the planning stages of creating an outdoor-education program called The Farm Chef Project. The mission of the Farm Chef project is to engage youth to learn to love all aspects of agriculture through growing, harvesting, cooking and eating all that our earth has to offer. Through hands-on, environmental-educational experiences, children will learn how to grow and cultivate their own food, with learning the benefits of conservation, importance of locally grown produce, and other environmental causes to support. Additionally, learning the skills to prepare a harvest into a meal, providing invaluable life-skill growth, as well as engaging in opportunities to expand the palate and try new foods.
My goal is to eventually host these programs on weekends to families and small groups, through youth summer programs, and to support schools in utilizing this program as an element in their curriculums. I am looking for usable farm land - whether that means just leasing a small plot for some garden beds or developing a partnership of some sort. I am willing to put in the needed sweat-equity, on top of financial equity to get this going. I am also eager to learn from anyone who is willing to share their farming knowledge, experiences and stories.
