My partner and I are moving to her hometown of Bethlehem and we plan to start a small organic farm together. We will start by focusing on growing a diverse range of vegetables and flowers, but I hope to learn about and eventually have livestock as well. I previously spent four years doing small-scale organic farming on the East End of Long Island, where I grew up. I worked at a few farms and then leased a small plot and did my own thing for one season, growing over 200 varieties on 1.5 acres and making a reasonable profit on the season. But, having no capital with which to expand the operation, at that point I decided to pursue my other passion, which is physics. After four years in the physics PhD program at Yale, I've decided that it is time to get back to the land. The dream is realistic now that I have the support of my fiance and a home to move into in Bethlehem.
The two of us are just getting started on thinking about the different ways this can work for us, and so we are open to learning about all the options and opportunities that are in the area.
