Hello there! My name is Sophie and I am looking to purchase a small scale farm to live on with my partner, Charlie. I have a degree in studio art and work as a tattoo artist, but have a passion for growing and my dream has always been to have a farm. My partner Charlie is an animal behaviorist currently researching for her PHD in New Zealand, hoping to finish her thesis this September. Throughout college I focused as much as I could on learning about sustainable farming practices, and spent my free time growing a mini garden in my dorm room. I started seeds in a grow light under my bed and raised seedlings on my windowsill. After graduating I've focused on growing as much food for myself and my family that I can in the small area, less then 1/4 acre. I'm currently growing over 7 varieties of tomatoes, 4 varieties of peppers, potatoes, watermelon, onions, native wildflowers, asparagus, beets 4 different kinds of beans and many herbs) and we also have been keeping bees since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. I grew up in a foodie family and we know the best food comes from the best produce! My partner and I have always been lovers of the outdoors, and we actually met at a summer camp over a decade ago. She grew up with backyard chickens and a family garden, and is very excited to return back to that lifestyle. We are very much just beginning our journey but are ready to jump in 100%. We hope to find a small scale farm, preferably no larger than 5 acres, where we can grow produce and hopefully keep chicken and quail. My favorite part about growing food is being able to share it with others, so a location close to a farmers market or restaurants would be wonderful. My plan is to focus on things that I love to eat, as well as a focus on perennials, an orchard, and a native cut flower garden. I had a blast this year selling started seedlings, and would love to continue that as well. Our operation will be 100% organic! We understand that making a living off of farming alone on such a small scale is unlikely, but we simply want to keep a few animals and provide food for our family and community. Right now we are trying to learn as much as we can about about growing without actually being on a farm, and I am starting an orchard at our family house up in New Hampshire. What we lack in experience we certainly make up for in enthusiasm. We can't wait to take this next step in the journey of our lives!
